Abhyangam is an Ayurvedic way of massage with specific herbal oils to nourish and revitalize the body. It is a part of purvakarma or preparatory measure. The physician will decide the suitability of the patient for this treatment and also the oils suitable for him/her. The patient will be on the special table and Ayurvedic oils are slowly warmed up and gently massaged in to the skin. Abhyangam is done in seven standard positions .The duration of this treatment is 45 minutes to one hour, followed by a bath using green gram powder to remove the oil. Abhyangam is done for a day or for any number of days as prescribed by the physician. To massage is to exercise the nervous system. It simultaneously calms and strengthens the nervous system, tones muscle and improves circulation. This also improves lymph flow increase the production of white blood corpuscles and antibodies, which provide more resistance against viruses and diseases. In this way abhyangam is a protector, preserver and a rejuvenator, increasing self-confidence and will power.
